Crowns

Teeth which have been broken, weakened by decay or have a very large filling may need to be restored by crowning (sometimes also called caps). A crown is an artificial restoration that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, restoring it to the natural shape of a tooth.

Crowns are made from a variety of different materials and these are constantly being upgraded. Many crowns are made with a precious metal core onto which porcelain is bonded to match exactly the colour of the adjacent teeth, other materials such as all gold or all porcelain, all ceramic, glass or composite are also used.

A crown will require at least two appointments. At the first appointment the tooth is prepared and an impression is taken of the prepared tooth. A temporary crown will be fitted while the permanent crown is being made to the dentists specific instructions. The second appointment will usually involve removing the temporary crown and fitting the permanent crown.

Crowns can sometimes be used to close gaps and improve the appearance of discoloured and chipped teeth. It also protects a tooth after you have had a rootcanal filling.

Crowns will be made to match your other teeth, with matching shade and shape of the adjacent teeth to secure a natural smile. For these type of crowns we use various types of tooth colour materials. In certain circumstances at the back of the mouth, where extra strenght is required, we use a precious metal of gold alloy, which makes it a very durable and secure restoration.

Crowns help us to restore your teeth to their natural form, and make it possible to eat normally and to give you back your smile.
